Materials needed:
• Pen/pencil
• Blank paper or printed word search template
Instructions:
1. Create a grid of 10 x 10 squares on the paper.
2. Choose a theme for the word search (e.g., animals, food, sports, etc.) and write as many related words as possible within the grid. Words can go up, down, or diagonal, and letters can overlap to be used more than once.
3. Create a list on the side or bottom of the page of the words you have entered.
4. Once you cannot fit any more words in, fill the blank boxes with random letters.
5. Give the completed word search to the child and ask them to find all the words on the list within the puzzle.
6. Encourage the child to time themselves and see how quickly they can find all the words.
7. Once the word search is complete, ask the child to reflect on the process. Ask them which intelligence(s) they used the most during the activity (e.g., visual, linguistic, logical).
This activity allows children to practice their visual intelligence by searching for words within the grid and their linguistic intelligence by reading and identifying the words on the list. Logical intelligence is practiced by strategically looking for the words in the puzzle. Additionally, this activity can help children build their vocabulary and spelling skills.
