Materials needed:
• Paper and pencils/markers
• Optional: actual groceries/items from a recent trip to the market
Instructions:
1. Have the child imagine going to the market to buy groceries.
2. Ask them to come up with a list of items they would buy at the market, starting with one item (e.g. chocolate).
3. Have them draw a picture of the first item on the list.
4. Ask the child to repeat the entire list out loud, adding the next item they would buy (e.g. bread) to the end of the list.
5. Have them draw a picture of the second item on the list.
6. Repeat step 4 and 5 for the remaining items on the list.
7. After the child has completed their list and drawn pictures of each item, have them reflect on their choices. Ask them to share why they chose each item, and if there were any items they decided not to include on their list.
8. Optional:
If the child has actual groceries/items from a recent trip to the market, have them lay them out and practice saying the items out loud in order, just like in the game.
This activity allows children to practice their visual intelligence by drawing pictures of the items and their intra-personal intelligence by reflecting on their choices and why they made them. Linguistic intelligence is also being practiced as they come up with and say the list out loud.
